Beyond the End of the Road in County Durham
In partnership with Northern Heartlands
When the city meets the countryside, all is not what it seems… what is the news ‘Beyond the End of the Road’?
Northumberland based Performing Arts Company, November Club, commissioned composer Katie Doherty and writer Laura Lindow to create an unusual and heartfelt new musical in 2016. It toured to several village halls across the county, including a livestock auction mart in Hexham, culminating in a performance at Sage Gateshead.
Set in a remote imaginary village called PLACE, our cast of 10 actors and musicians tell a story infused with anecdotes and memories gathered from rural communities in Northumberland, creating a unique musical exploring rural life. Opening night at Hexham and Northern Mart showcased this unique production in its natural and authentic environment, thus winning the prestigious 2017 Achates Philanthropy Prize for both the Mart and November Club.
In July 2018 we are working with Co Durham’s Northern Heartlands project to take Beyond the End of the Road to several venues in Teesdale and Weardale.
Northern Heartlands is one of 16 Great Place Schemes in England, funded by Heritage Lottery Fund and Arts Council England. Our Great Place is in County Durham and covers Weardale and Teesdale including the market towns of Barnard Castle, Bishop Auckland, Shildon, Crook, Tow Law, and Willington. Northern Heartlands’ mission is to deliver cultural activities that transform people’s understanding of the heritage, landscapes and places they live in, building their confidence and ability to influence policy and decision-making.
Please support our Crowdfunder page to allow us to add further Northumberland venues to the tour, capitalising on having the show up and running already.
